Generally a combat character is going to want an accuracy booster, a damage booster, and a defense penalty negator at the bare minimum. Soak boosters, multiattacks, and more of the above are solid extensions, if you don't have anything else in mind. I love Exalted, but you're not wrong, these books are not newbie-friendly. If you're not familiar with it, there's an excellent podcast - Systematic Understanding of Everything, that covers a lot of the basic mechanics and lore of the game, including an episode on character creation. I believe there's a couple good youtube videos covering it too.
